Atovaquone+Proguanil is used for the treatment and prevention of malaria.
Take Atovaquone+Proguanil exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take this medicine together with food or a milky drink to improve absorption. Try to take it at the same time each day. If you vomit within one hour of dosing, you should repeat the dose.
If you are taking this medicine for the prevention of malaria, take it 1-2 days before travel. Continue taking this medicine on a daily basis throughout the whole period of travel and for at least 7 days after leaving the area. If your trip is longer than 28 days, discuss with your doctor how you should take this medicine.
If you have difficulties swallowing tablets, you may crush the tablet and mix it with milk. Stir and drink immediately.
Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have severe kidney disease as this medicine may not be suitable for you.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
In addition to taking Atovaquone+Proguanil, you must also take preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites. Use an effective insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to reduce exposure and avoid going out between dusk to dawn. Effective insect repellents should contain at least 20-33% diethyltoluamide (DEET).
The symptoms of malaria are fever, chills, headache, muscle pain and a flu-like illness. Consult a doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms during your travel or anytime within 1 year after leaving the area, especially within 3 months after your exposure.
For as long as you are taking this medicine, you may need to have regular liver and kidney function tests to check your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
Atovaquone+Proguanil may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects may include any of the following: stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, cough, fever, difficulty in sleeping, loss of appetite and weakness.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines for nausea or vomiting e.g. metoclopramide
- antibiotics e.g. tetracycline
- medicines for TB (tuberculosis) e.g. rifampicin
- medicines for blood thinning e.g. warfarin
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Atovaquone+Proguanil.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
